Festivals & stadiums
Tens of thousands of phones overload the nearest tower. Texts stall and calls drop right when you need to find your people.
- Phones within 10–30 m link directly over Bluetooth.
- Photos and files switch to Wi-Fi Direct for speed.
- Messages to friends across the site hop through other festival-goers’ phones, sealed.
Protests
Networks get throttled or cut, and phones can be taken. You need to stay in touch without leaving a trail.
- Pair with your group in person beforehand, so everyone shows as Verified.
- Turn on High-Risk mode: text only, cover traffic, instant lock.
- If radio is jammed, move messages camera to camera with QR handoff.
Disasters & outages
Storms and earthquakes take out power and towers first. Messages still need to get through, even slowly.
- Messages wait safely on your phone instead of failing, with a clear reason why.
- Neighbours and rescuers carry sealed messages as they move, for up to 72 hours.
- A paired LoRa radio reaches kilometres when nobody is close.
Off-grid travel
Trails, boats, ski huts and remote camps, where there was never any signal to begin with.
- Pair a small LoRa radio to your phone.
- Short texts reach kilometres between radios.
- Back within range, photos and voice notes catch up over Bluetooth.
Shutdowns & censorship
The internet is filtered or watched, and ordinary messengers are blocked or monitored.
- Nearby, everything stays phone to phone and never touches the internet.
- For far-away contacts, the optional MeshGRID add-on carries already-sealed messages through the Nym mixnet.
- Where the mixnet itself is blocked, disguise bridges will make the connection look like ordinary web traffic. They are on the roadmap.
